Description

Candy Land VCR Board Game King Kandy, Grandma Nutt, The Candy Land Kids, and Forest Animals 22" x 27" Oversized Production Cel Key Master Setup (Milton Bradley, 1986). "Excuse me, Jolly, are you missing any gumdrops?" King Kandy searches for clues with Grandma Nutt and the Candy Land Kids in this remarkably rare and outstandingly large Key Master setup created for the Candy Land VCR Board Game. Candy Land, sometimes written Candyland, is a simple yet enduring board game originally created by Eleanor Abbott in 1948, and play-tested by children in the hospital ward where Abbott was recovering from polio. After submitting it to Milton Bradley for publishing, it quickly became the company's best selling game as it required no reading making it playable for children as young as 2. In 1984, coinciding with Hasbro's purchase of Milton Bradley, Candy Land received a design overhaul with the addition of new characters and a cohesive storyline. Two years later the VCR Board Game edition was released featuring the new characters, but consisted of four simplistically animated stories with an interactive element for the included gameboard and card sets. This Key Master setup can be spotted during the first story "Who's Been Eating My House?", seen beginning near the 4:03 mark of the approximately 30 minute game movie when viewed online. The hand-inked, hand-painted oversized cel features the 4 characters (King Kandy, Grandma Nutt, and the Candy Kids) along with some forest animals sharing a combined image area of 12" x 8.25" on the 20.5" x 25.5" oversized cel which has peghole strips taped to the lower edge. The hand-painted airbrush background features a mountain of gumdrops with a main image area of 15" x 18" on board trimmed to an overall size of 22.75" x 27". This incredibly rare Key Master setup is believed to be one of only two surviving original illustrations created for the game's film. A print of the game box is also included for reference. With typical studio handling and edge wear including remaining tape, a diagonal crease in the cel, and surface wear/debris, overall this rare and unusual Candy Land setup is in Good to Very Good condition.
