Description

Merrill Blosser Freckles and His Friends Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-25-26 (NEA Service, 1926). This example of Blosser's sustained masterpiece of kid-stuff hilarity calls for a familiarity with wordplay and the popular culture of 1926: Preschooler Tagalong McGoosey is perplexed by a neighbor's use of the word, pioneer. (Tag thinks a pioneer "is a man who plays a piano.") Then Tag wonders how a pioneer could have "lived right here if [there] wuzzn't no pitcher show." (Picture show is archaic lingo for a silent-screen movie theater, which would have used piano accompaniment.) Mind-boggling tomfoolery, anticipating the much later Who's on First? routine popularized by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Freckles would soon evolve into an adventure-story narrative, with the characters aging into their teenage years. Originator Blosser's involvement was near-lifelong, and in 1965 the National Cartoonists Society cited Freckles as "the oldest regular comic strip still piloted by its creator." Ink over graphite on age-toned Bristol board. Dimensions, 24.75" x 6", matted out to 28.75" x 11" and inscribed to fellow artist Murray Harris. Excellent condition, with toning commensurate with age.
