Description

Gaar Williams Wotta Life! Wotta Life! Daily Comic Strip Panel Original Art dated 3-15-34 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1934). Everything Williams touched turned to droll irony. Here, he finds a festive Floridian scene darkened by the arrival of "a fella in an overcoat," quote/unquote. In hundreds of cartoons every year, the artist never failed to touch a nerve involving the sheer inconvenience of living -- and trigger a chuckle, in the process. Too emotionally complicated a piece to be called an outright gag, the piece leaves a lasting impression. The artist's mastery of deep perspective is in full flower, here. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" square. Light/moderate age-toning. Condition: Excellent.
