Description
Wally Wood Witzend #1 Cover Preliminary Original Art (Wood Studio, 1966). In search of an ideal cover image for the debut of his DIY showcase magazine, Witzend, Wood sketched up this batch of bug-eyed varmints, along with a grinning catlike face and a long, tall rodent. The little bulb-eyed guy (seen from two angles, right-center) made the cut and therefore appeared in a near-identical final version on the book's cover. Wood had been the comics' most hopeful idealist in his prime years of the 1950s and 1960s. Although he had experienced many disappointments in the treacherous arena of commercial publishing, Wood believed that his development of Witzend -- a creator-owned and creator-operated venture -- might free him and his associates from the harsher realities of censorship and corporate sweatshop deadlines. Which seemed true, for as long as the experiment could last. Witzend appeared on no fixed schedule, but rather, as Wood said, "at my convenience." Wood soon found himself chained anew to the corporate-commercial assignments, but Witzend nonetheless had invigorated his imagination, as these playful rehearsal sketches bear witness. Graphite on Eaton Corrasable-brand typewriter paper. Dimensions, 8.5" x 11". Lightly toned, with center crease. Very Good condition.More information about Wally Wood.
