Description

Dan Spiegle Space Family Robinson: Lost in Space on Space Station One #44 Story Page 14 Original Art (Gold Key/Western Publ., 1975). Scenarist Gaylord Du Bois must hold the record, here, for multiple uses of the word Space in a single title. (Just in case the reader didn't get the space-travel point the first time.) This grand sequence is entirely earthbound, in any case, with the space travelers ducking for cover in a forest teeming with rampaging buffalo-type varmints. The castaways' heroic robot looks significantly different from its counterpart on the related teleseries, Lost in Space. The story is rooted in Johann Wyss' novel of 1812, Swiss Family Robinson, which also had inspired straightforward movie projects (1940 and 1960, among others). Veteran artist Spiegel, seen here at a peak of storytelling brilliance, would soon reinvent himself as a leading presence in the independent-comics boom of the 1980s. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area of 12" x 18". Excellent condition.
