Description

Bob Montana Archie Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-9-63 (Archie Comics-King Features Syndicate, 1963). Montana's near-autobiographical brilliance charges this fine large-scale example of first-generation Archie funny business: High-school principal Weatherbee finds his prize flower garden wrecked -- blames janitor Svensen -- and then finds himself knocked through a window by a rampaging goat (the school's new sports mascot and devourer of all those flowers). All of which may or may not have happened in real life, of course. Montana had based the feature, after all, upon his hometown circle of friends and family. A brisk exercise in slapstick, worth studying in detail to see how artfully Montana pushes the absurdities to a breaking-point. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.75" x 13.75". Moderate toning, handling wear, and random spot-staining. Very Good condition.
