Description
Al Smith Mutt and Jeff Sunday Comic Strip Inscribed Original Art dated 6-23-1963 (Bell Syndicate, 1963). Circus folks reject the notion of a "lion tamer," explaining, "You can't tame a lion -- you train it." Othello Jeff begs to differ: He tames this unfriendly lion with a pair of scissors. And all because the creature had ridiculed Jeff's cueball head. Co-title character Augustus Mutt appears in four panels. Classic Mutt and Jeff-style tomfoolery from Smith, who had emerged from the shadow of originator Bud Fisher to become the strip's long-term defining artist. Inscribed at upper margin. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.5" x 12.5", matted out to 24" x 19". The logo is a printed paste-up. Age-toned (light-moderate) and in Very Good condition. From the Citro Family Collection.
