Frank Willard Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-23-40 (Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate, 1940). Terrific crossover appeal for the slapstick buffs, and for fans of Depression-into-wartime swing-band music: A censor-bait episode from Willard's sustained rude-comedy masterpiece finds Lord Plushbottom arriving home to find Lady Plushbottom entertaining a gentleman caller. The radio is playing a naughty song about a "man who comes to our house ... Papa comes home, and the man goes away." The lyric comes from "The Man Who Comes Around" by Bud Green and Tommy Tucker -- a 1939-43 hit for such big-time entertainers as Ozzie Nelson, the Prairie Ramblers, and Les Brown. Brilliantly timed and delivered for maximum punch, and a classic example of the deep communion between cartooning and popular music. Moonshine Mullins and Uncle Millie Mullins have walk-on roles. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, approximately 19" x 6". Toning, pinholes, corner creasing, staining, smudging, and handling wear. In Very Good condition.Auction Info
