Description

Noel Sickles Scorchy Smith Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-29-36 (Associated Press, 1936). Sickles merged a fine-art Impressionistic style with comics storytelling in Scorchy Smith, an aviation thriller that influenced his studio partner, Milton Caniff, on Terry and the Pirates and, by extension, inspired scores of additional cartoonists. This suspenseful example exemplifies that lush inking technique, which lends urgency to a sequence about an imminent crash-landing. The assigned title of the episode (a copyright-protection measure) is "Due for a Big Blow-Up." Ink over graphite on lightly toned Bristol. Image area, 24" x 5.25". Excellent condition.
From the Bobby G. Murphy Collection.
