Description

Al Capp and Frank Frazetta Li'l Abner Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-21-54 (United Feature Syndicate, 1954). Capp's secret weapon during 1954-1961 was Frazetta, hired as a key assistant on Li'l Abner after the young artist had found a shrinking comic-book market inadequate for his ambitions. (Comic strips paid better and attracted more respect.) This lively example spoofs a popular television program of the 1950s, This Is Your Life, and centers upon Lucifer and Pansy Yokum, the hillbilly parents of Abner Yokum. Voluptuous female figures (Frazetta's specialty) appear in two panels. The TV-host character wears an evil grin, exemplifying Capp's contempt for This Is Your Life and other such proto-reality shows, which the artist considered an invasion of privacy. Ink over graphite on conjoined slabs of Bristol board. The Abner logotype is missing from the upper area. Dimensions, 19" x 22". Very Good condition.
From the Denis Kitchen Collection.
