Description

Air Masses and Fronts and Radio Waves Production Background Group of 2 (Walt Disney, 1940). This lot offers two wonderful and rare production backgrounds from the World War II-era Disney productions: Air Masses and Fronts and Radio Waves. During the '40s, Walt Disney Studios collaborated with the Navy, the Treasury Department, and the Department of Agriculture, as requested by the U.S. services, producing various propaganda and training films. The background for Air Masses and Fronts shows an image of the globe in sepia tones with a black backdrop, highlighted by the Equatorian line in red, while the background for Radio Waves features a map of the U.S. showing the delineated states with a gray-scale palette, showing the production notes "2650 Sc. 25" and "2638 - 04.0 -" in the bottom borders respectively. Both backgrounds are rendered in gouache on 16-field five-peghole background boards with minor edge trimming and bear studio stamps on their backs. During this era, backgrounds in the Walt Disney Studios were created by artists like Al Dempster, Claude Coats, Dick Anthony, Joe Stahley, Nino Carbe, and Ray Huffine. With light handling and edge wear from production, the lot is overall in Very Good condition.
