Description
101 Dalmatians RARE Color Model Cel (Walt Disney, 1961). "Hmph, unusual breed. Haha, very unusual. Hmph, surely not." Pongo is on the lookout for his "pet's" (his owner Roger) soulmate as he is watching strangers who are walking their dogs and just so happen to look comically identical to their dog. Featured in this hand-inked color model cel is the first owner and pet to pass by his window and even though he admittedly is a pretty poor judge of human beauty, Pongo realizes that this is not the match for his pet. Theatrically released nearly 65 years ago on 1/25/1961, the animated adventure comedy film sees two British dalmatians that give birth to fifteen puppies, who are later kidnapped by the obsessive Cruella de Vil, wanting to make them into fur coats. Pongo and Perdita set out on a cross-country adventure to save their litter but in the end, they end up rescuing 84 other dalmatians, making them the 101 dalmatians. This movie was the directorial debut of Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman (1909 - 1985) who is one of Walt Disney's "Nine Old Men" and a Disney Legend! After suffering from the commercial failure of Sleeping Beauty (1950), production costs needed to be cut. As a result, this was the first Disney feature film to use photocopying technology (Xerography), which made an animated film with this much visual complexity possible. Xerox was especially crucial in helping animate the plethora of spotted dogs. It also set the visual style of Disney animation (a scratchy, hard outline look) for years until the technology advanced enough (with the production of The Rescuers (1977) to allow a softer look. The color model can be seen between the 4:53 - 5:03 timestamp near the beginning of the animated film. The combined character image measures at 11.25" x 9.25" and the overall condition is Very Good with minor surface wear, and light handling wear and edge wear.Auction Info
