Description

Al Smith (as Bud Fisher) Mutt and Jeff Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-9-33 (H.C. Fisher, 1933). Augustus Mutt runs a show-biz troupe. Othello Jeff (usually known as "just Jeff") appears in drag as one of the showgirls. The troupe is fatigued from overwork. Jeff administers a weird punchline. A dedicated assistant, Smith took the lead on Mutt and Jeff by default during the early 1930s -- creator Fisher had lost interest, except in the revenues. Smith remained in charge for nearly 50 years, though denied a byline until the mid-1950s. His distinctive style is evident in the rounded pen-line, and in Mutt's more protuberant honker. Ink on Bristol board. Image area, 28" x 7". Very Good condition, with edge toning and two slightly cracked vertical creases.
