Description

Pinocchio Gideon Rough Animation Layout Drawing (Walt Disney, 1940). This is an outstanding rough layout featuring Gideon from Pinocchio. Gideon was Honest John's sidekick, a shifty con artist that happens to be mute, although he does make hiccup sounds which were provided by Mel Blanc, "the man of a thousand voices." Gideon is loyal, but his drunk and bumbling ways do more to annoy Honest John than assist. This incredible rough has a lot going on under the mat board. The piece contains a "WDP" stamp and embossed "Walt Disney Productions" which indicates that this piece was initially offered through the Courvoisier art program. In the late 1930s, The Walt Disney Studios was riding on a tidal wave of success. Guthrie Courvoisier, President of the highly esteemed Courvoisier Galleries in San Francisco, was aware of Disney's escalating reputation, and saw vast opportunity in it. He believed that offering the cels and production drawings exclusively through a respected art gallery would entice high-end collectors and museums, and would cement Disney's reputation as a respected figure in the art community. The rough was rendered in graphite on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. The piece has been taped to the mat and a sheet of plastic has been taped to the drawing for protection which has yellowed over time. The drawing exhibits age-related toning and has smudges only visible under the mat. The matboard measures 14" x 18" with an aperture of 7.75" x 5.75". Overall condition is Fair.
