Description
"Mary and Baby Jesus" Preliminary Study Original Illustration Signed by Ralph Hulett - Acrylic on 14" x 17" Board (c. 1950s-60s). A rare preliminary study depicting Mary and Baby Jesus by Disney's renowned background painter Ralph Hulett (1915 - 1974). In Fine Art, a study is a drawing, sketch or painting done in preparation for a finished piece, or as visual notes. Studies are often used to understand the problems involved in rendering subjects and to plan the elements to be used in finished works, such as light, color, form, perspective and composition. Studies can have more impact than more-elaborately planned work, due to the fresh insights the artist gains while exploring the subject. The excitement of discovery can give a study vitality. This rare study was illustrated using acrylic on 14" x 17" board. Meticulously crafted, with each brushstroke conveying the soft textures of snow, the warmth of their embrace, and the magic of the holiday atmosphere. Hulett's masterful use of acrylic paints is evident as he brings the image to life, capturing the subtle nuances of light and shadow that infuse the artwork with an enchanting glow. Ralph Hulett was a background painter whose screen credits include the stunning backgrounds in Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), and The Jungle Book (1967) to name just a few. Hulett was also a prolific fine art painter with an amazing command of his subject matter. He graduated from Chouinard Art Institute (now known as CalArts). While still in college, he was hired by the Walt Disney Studios to paint backgrounds on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He would stay with Disney through Robin Hood (1973) passing away the following year. Today, Ralph Hulett's legacy lives on through his art, which graces the collections of galleries, museums, and private collectors worldwide. His impact on the animation industry and the art world at large continues to inspire emerging artists to push boundaries and redefine creative expression. Signed by the artist and presented in Good condition with some surface and edge wear. From the Disney Background Artist Ralph Hulett Archive.
