Description
The Hobbit Main Title Opening Scene Original Storyboard Sheet Group of 8 (Rankin-Bass, 1977). "The greatest adventure is what lies ahead." Join Bilbo, Gandalf, and Thorin Oakenshield's company of dwarfs as they prepare for a fantastic journey with this lot, offering a collection of eight original storyboards created to plan the main title opening scene of the 1977 animated film The Hobbit. Based on the revered novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, this memorable movie was produced by Rankin-Bass with its captivated animation courtesy of Topcraft. This now-defunct Japanese studio would later produce Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. These eight outstanding 13.75" x 10" storyboard sheets show the evocative artwork done by the film's storyboard artist, Takashi Hisaoka, an anime industry veteran known for directing episodes of Sally the Witch, Mazinger Z, and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV, one of the series adapted to create Voltron. The fabulous pictures, rendered in graphite on the 3.5" x 2.5" panels, show the detailed visual planning for what we see in the movie as the song "The Greatest Adventure (The Ballad of the Hobbit)" plays as we see Bilbo dreaming of the aftermath of his quest and him leaving Bag End with Gandalf and the dwarfs. Each of the storyboards is numbered 1 through 8 in the top right corner, showing paste-in with the lyrics of the song corresponding with how they are to appear in the film, as well as brief descriptions of the shots. Some of the sheets show small areas of humidity wrinkling and faint toned stains. Presenting overall mild handling and edge wear from production, as well as light age-related toning, the lot is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
