Description
Mulan Original Storyboard Art and Story Concept Group of 5 (Walt Disney, 1998). From Disney's 1998 feature Mulan comes a group of five pieces of incredible original storyboard and story concept art! Each was created by experienced story artist Thom Enriquez in mixed media with one storyboard and four pages of thumbnail story concepts in total. All but one are signed by the artist! Mulan was based on the Chinese Ballad of Mulan but originally had a romantic comedy-style plot where Mulan was engaged to Shang before having met him and left home to escape the marriage. This was later changed to stay closer to the source material where Mulan left home to save her father from fighting in another war. The original storyboard looks to be from an earlier or deleted scene where Shang has a yin and yang necklace, similar to the one he and Mulan each wear half of in the sequel. The story concept thumbnails were created for an earlier version of the film as Mulan readies an arrow - not with a bow, but with an instrument - and prepares to save the day. This looks to be an early version of the palace sequence near the end of the film when Mulan, Shang, Chien-Po, Ling, and Yao work together to save the emperor. Each page of thumbnails is rendered on 11'' x 8.5'' paper and the storyboard is about 10.25'' x 5.5''. The lot is in Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear and pinholes from production use and is a rare look at the Mulan's early heroics as well as Shang's early development.From the Noted Disney Concept and Story Artist Thom Enriquez Collection.
