Walt Disney's Goofy: The Good Sport First Edition Hardcover Book Signed by Jack Kinney (Walt Disney/HP Books, 1985). This charming, out-of-print book, Walt Disney's Goofy: The Good Sport, presents the history of Goofy's "life" throughout the films, comics, merchandise, and other media he appeared in from 1932-1985. Published over 35 years ago as a follow-up to Walt Disney's Donald Duck: 50 Years of Happy Frustration, this book is illustrated throughout in both full color and black and white. The main chapters are titled "The Evolution of the Goof" (creation); "Goofy's Rise to Stardom" (joining the Fab Five); "Goofy into the Post-War Period (1940s-50s); "Goofy and the World" (lifestyle and wardrobe); Bringing Goofy to Life" (animating a cartoon); "Goofy for Sale" (merchandise); and "Return of the Goof" (modern and Sport Goofy). A bibliography is included, and a "Sport Goofy Diary" page closes out the book with a chronological list of major events to feature Goofy since he was named the official sporting world ambassador for Walt Disney in 1980. The book is hand-signed on the title page by Jack Kinney (1909-1992) with an original sketch of Goofy and Mickey Mouse. Kinney began as Disney animator in the early 1930s who later became the studio's primary director of Goofy cartoons, having directed more than 40 from the 1930s through the late '50s. His most notable creations for the character were the "How to..." series; Goofy demonstrated how to play various popular sports but his efforts in these films typically had predictably disastrous results. A Howard Lowery Certificate of Authenticity verifying the legitimacy of the signatures is included. The out-of-print book is in a dust jacket with 96 pages, measuring 9" x 10.75".
