Description

Museum of Modern Art NYC Exhibition "Peter Ellenshaw: Special Effects Artist" Installation Introductory Panel (1979). This original introductory panel from the Museum of Modern Art's 1979 installation, "Peter Ellenshaw: Special Effects Artist," welcomed visitors to a landmark celebration of Hollywood illusion. On view at MoMA in New York City from September 17 through October 30, 1979, the exhibition highlighted Ellenshaw's visionary matte paintings and visual effects for The Black Hole, Spartacus, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Mary Poppins, alongside miniature models of The Black Hole's space hardware, color stills, production-used artwork, and striking before-and-after footage demonstrating matte photography's seamless magic. The panel concisely introduced Ellenshaw's seven-decade career and more than fifty film credits, noting four Academy Award® nominations and his OSCAR® for Mary Poppins. It also situated his work within cinema history, underscoring how painted vistas and optical wizardry expanded the possible on screen. Ellenshaw's later honors-including Disney Legend status and his enduring influence in visual effects-echo the importance of this MoMA moment. Produced on sturdy exhibition board, the piece measures 32" x 45". It shows surface wear and edge scuffing from display and handling but presents handsomely, a rare surviving artifact from a pivotal museum showcase of practical effects artistry. In Fair condition.
