Description

"The Art of Ferdinand Horvath" Character Design Illustrations (Horvath, c.1930s). Here's a fantastic character design illustration by Disney's master of caricatures and character design, Ferdinand Horvath (1891 - 1973). In January of 1933, Horvath began a six-month trial period of working at the Disney studio, but would end up working there for nearly four years. In a letter he wrote to his wife from the studio, that the studio was a "crazy house", where space was limited and everyone was constantly changing places. His first job at Disney was to design advertising and promotional pieces. He also worked on backgrounds for The Cookie Carnival and The Band Concert and layouts for many other shorts, including Old King Cole. Horvath was mostly an inspirational sketch artist. He produced many drawings, sometimes with humorous or grim subjects, as inspiration for the animators. Horvath created this concept illustration using graphite, color pencil with touches of gouache, the three characters are trimmed and affixed to 12 field 2-peghole animation paper. The artwork is signed in the bottom right by the artist. The illustration is in Very Good condition with age-related toning.
