Description

Mickey's Mellerdrammer Mickey Mouse Animation Drawing Group of 6 (Walt Disney, 1933). It's almost time for Mickey and Minnie's production of Uncle Tom's Cabin to begin in the short Mickey's Mellerdrammer and the mouse is getting ready for his big role as Topsy in this rare sequence of six 12 field animation drawings. The short premiered on 3/18/1933 and has been banned since its initial release, only appearing in the Walt Disney Treasures DVD collection. Mickey and friends try to dazzle the crowds at their "Tom's Show", a performance of the 1852 novel that started in the 1850s and continued well into the 1900s until film began to replace vaudeville shows as entertainment. The sequence is a prime example of the insensitive racial stereotypes used in the short as Mickey dawns blackface using an exploding firecracker, found starting at about 1:19. The short and these historical drawings are a product of their time and a reflection of the cultural norms of the period, as well as a rare look at a long-banned short. Mickey ranges from approximately 5.5'' x 5.5'' to 2.25'' x 5.5'' and the drawings are noted 19, 95, 154, 271, 321, and 367 in the lower right corner. Five have color pencil markings on the back noting where part of the background would be. Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear and faint age-related toning.
