Description

Samuel "Sam" Armstrong Christian Life Emphasis Week Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (Tacoma, Wash., News-Tribune, c. 1920s). This beautifully drawn editorial cartoon shows Jesus Christ appearing before modern-era workers, surrounded by radiant beams of light that obscure the big city buildings behind him. It was rendered in ink on a large sheet of Bristol board by Sam Armstrong (1893 - 1977) several years before he joined the Disney Studios as an animator and director. The drawing highlights an annual event held at colleges around the country, most often around the beginning of the academic year (this one notes the dates as January 16-23). This may have pertained to the University of Puget Sound in downtown Tacoma, which was a Christian institution of learning at that time. The artboard measures a whopping 22.5" x 28.5", with an approximate image area of 21.5" x 26.75" and is signed in the lower left. It's over 100 years old, and in Good to Very Good condition with some handling and edge wear, plus mild age-related toning of the artboard.
