Description

Ernie Bushmiller Nancy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-24-49 (United Feature Syndicate, 1949). Is that Sluggo Smith's tough-guy cap? Or is he wearing Aunt Fritzi Ritz's brassiere on his head by mistake? Oh, it's his cap, all right -- newly laundered by Nancy Ritz but over-saturated with starch in all the wrong protuberant places. It's complicated, but Bushmiller pulls off one of his miraculous three-second visual gags in the process. Weird guy, that Bushmiller, but the right kind of weird. As MAD's Wally Wood (who often spoofed Nancy) once explained the gravitational tug of Bushmiller's artistry: "By the time you decided not to read it, you already had." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 5.25" x 18.75". Excellent condition.
