Description

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White and Forest Animation Production Cels with Custom Background (Walt Disney, 1937). Here's a rare and stunning piece of original production art from both the historic beginnings of Walt Disney and also for the Disney Courvoisier program! When the Disney Studios released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, the film was immensely successful, which prompted Guthrie Courvoisier to approach Disney with an idea. He proposed that Disney release a limited number of original production cels to respected art galleries, displayed on custom-prepared backgrounds, to sell to discerning buyers. A "test run" of sorts was conducted in September of 1938, with the very first "Courvoisier" setups being prepared in the Disney studio itself, and distributed to prestigious galleries around the world, including the Leicester Galleries in London, England. This endeavor was an incredible success, and this led to the creation of the Courvoisier program at Disney. Remarkably, this gorgeous piece was from this first "test-run" of Courvoisier's idea, originally sold through the Leicester Galleries at an exhibition in 1938. That means that this was one of the very first Disney cels to ever be offered to the public! The piece features a lovely image of Snow White being ushered through the forest by a flurry of forest animals, atop an image of vines from another scene. Snow White's image-trimmed nitrate production cel measures about 7.75" tall. Twenty-two birds, a tortoise, and a deer are featured in full-figure, trimmed to image from their original nitrate cels. The beautiful hand-inked, hand-painted cels are affixed to a 12" x 10" piece of paper, which is affixed to another piece of paper. The paper backgrounds were custom-created by the Disney studio (a rarity only found in these earliest Courvoisier setups, as later pieces had their backgrounds created by Courvoisier Galleries). The piece is matted and framed with glass, with a matboard aperture of 13" x 12" and an overall frame size of 21" x 20.5". There are two Leicester Galleries stickers on the back of the frame, one with some information about the piece and its 1938 sale. The piece is in Good condition overall, with some handling and wear from age and studio use. There is some minor paint separation on the cels, with some small cracks on the lower edge of Snow White's skirt. The frame is sold as-is.
