Description

Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Madame Upanova RARE Rough Animation Drawing Sequence of 17 (Walt Disney, 1940). Included here is a spectacular sequence of original rough animation drawings featuring Madame Upanova from the "Dance of the Hours" segment in Walt Disney's Fantasia (1940), the studio's third animated feature. Set to classical music conducted by Leopold Stokowski, these drawings isolate the ostrich prima ballerina in a focused study of turns: Madame Upanova executes elegant pirouettes, her long limbs and sweeping tutu arcs mapped in fluid construction lines. The sequence highlights the staging and timing for the spin itself-prep, spot, rise to relevé, and controlled finish-without additional characters or action to distract from the performance. Rendered in graphite over red pencil on 12-field animation paper, each sheet preserves the animator's exploratory touch with loose underdrawings and rotation marks that define the balance and silhouette of the character before cleanup. In traditional production, approved roughs like these guided assistants and clean-up artists toward the final ink-and-paint drawings, making them the backbone of on-screen movement. These are a cohesive, character-specific run of poses that capture Disney draftsmanship at its most instructional and expressive. An exceedingly rare grouping of vintage animation roughs and a true prize for collectors. Condition is Good, with age-related toning and edge wear from studio use.
