Fantasia "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" RARE Original Concept/ Color Key Painting Featuring the Enchanted Brooms (Walt Disney, 1940). In this haunting scene from Disney's classic film Fantasia, the brooms that Mickey chops up with an axe return to their original form to continue their task of filling the cistern with water. Offered here is an extremely rare concept color key of the re-animated broom from the 36:05 mark in Disney's musical magnum opus. The exquisitely detailed image is rendered in watercolor and gouache on trimmed 12 field paper. An aperture of black board with an opening of 6.5" x 5" has been affixed to the paper and a protective cel overlay stapled to it. Outside the aperture there are notes on lighting for the scene. It is an absolutely remarkable piece of original artwork showing the detail with which Disney approached each scene in this ambitious and innovative film. A similar piece can be seen on page 141 of "The Walt Disney Film Archives" book by Taschen. This masterpiece is housed in a 16" x 12" mat with a 7.5" x 5.75" opening. The paper outside the aperture shows handling, edge wear and toning, but the 85-year-old painting is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
