Description

Pinocchio Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio Storyboard (Walt Disney, 1940). "Pinoke, come here. Look. He ain't here." "He... he's gone!" Having barely managed to escape Pleasure Island thanks in no small part to his Conscience, Pinocchio is disconcerted to discover Geppetto's home boarded up and empty in this fantastically detailed original trimmed storyboard from Disney's second animated feature film, the Academy Award-winning Pinocchio. Due to the pressures to complete Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, story meetings for Pinocchio did not begin until late March of 1938 with storyboard artist Bianca Majolie commissioned to write a new outline based on Carlo Collodi's original 1883 Italian children's novel. The story was refined and evolved over the following months into the classic we fondly remember today, in part through the use of the storyboarding process which was developed at Walt Disney Studios during the early 1930s. This moment of Pinocchio peeking through a boarded window into Geppetto's abandoned cottage can be spotted near the 1:07:26. Rendered in graphite and colored pencil on animation paper, Jiminy has a full-figured character size of 2.25" x 2". Pinocchio measures 6" x 3" with primarily his face and hands visible, however in the remarkable detail you can also make out a small glimpse of his Pleasure Island prize- the donkey ears! The sheet has been trimmed to 7.75" x 5.75" and mounted to textured bond paper with an overall size of 9" x 7". With typical handling and edge wear including the noted trimming and remaining tape in the corners, overall this masterfully rendered storyboard is in Very Good condition.
