Description
Samuel Armstrong "Still Trying to Talk His Way Out" Original Signed Political Cartoon (1923-25). The rare original ink and graphite political cartoon in this lot was created by Samuel Armstrong (1893 - 1977), an incredible background and layout artist, sequence director, storyman, and art editor who worked on everything from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the Tacoma News Tribune. This work of art was made between 1923 and 1925 during the French and Belgian occupation of Ruhr in Germany and succinctly visualizes the events with France guarding Germany in a cell labeled "occupation of Ruhr". The French occupied the industrial town after they found deficiencies in coal and other raw materials required as reparation payments from the Treaty of Versailles. Civilians in the region put up a fight; however, passive resistance and civil disobedience led to the Ruhr economy shutting down, significantly worsening the economic crisis, and the collapse of the country's currency. The cartoon references the Cuno strike and proposals that helped workers in the region and Gustav Stresemann and his policies that ended passive resistance and established a new currency to stabilize the economy. The lot features the title in graphite at the top edge and Armstrong signed the work in the lower right. It measures an impressive 20.5'' x 23.75'' on about 23.5'' x 27.25'' thin board. Good to Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear, faint age-related toning, pinholes, and minor edge tears and debris.Auction Info
