Edrien Dr. Blake Returns Dustjacket Original Painting (Avalon Books, 1970). Romance authors of the 20th century longed to place their tales with Avalon -- partly for the guarantee of a book-cover design by Edrien. The singly named artist was a selling point in his own right: Many collectors would seek out the Avalon titles for the artwork, whether or not one liked an author or a story. Here's an exceptional Edrien, involving a doctor-and-nurse romance that appears to involve some disturbing secret. (Check out that weasly facial expression.) Here is a fine example of Edrien's ability to present two paintings in a single composition: The front-cover image (right) blends with the spine image (left). The smaller figure was designed to appear alone when the book would have been shelved. Opaque watercolors (dry-brush effects) on deep-texture illustration board. Image area, 9.75" x 12.25".
