Description
Frederic Rodrigo Gruger The Saturday Evening Post Original Art for 7-31-15 Episode of P.G. Wodehouse's Something New (Curtis Publ., 1915). Gruger, a master of photorealism in pencil-strokes, defines the attitude of Wodehouse's first of many tales about Lord Ernsworth of Blandings Castle -- a recurring figure in many short stories and novels. The SatEvePost serialized Something New during June-August of 1915, in an Americanization of the original British manuscript. In either version, Something New is a satire of high society. The U.K. title was Something Fresh, changed to New in America, where fresh implies impertinence. The illustration depicts two servants, who spend much of the book ridiculing their "betters." Graphite, charcoal, and wet-brush graphite wash on illustration board. Image area, 10" x 13". Moderate age-toning. Very Good condition.Auction Info
