Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) - Judge Magazine V94 Issue 2420 "Revenge" Gag Cartoon Original Art (Judge Publishing, 1928). "Now see here, animal! The next time ya get fresh and bite me, I'm goin' to take aspirin and sober up. And then where will you be?" A tipsy dude in a top-hat and tux has a talk with his hallucination in this early gag drawing by Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. Geisel became a writer/artist with Judge in 1927, and here is a very rare original cartoon from that magazine. The art is in ink on board or paper and features one of Geisel's fabulous oddball animal creatures he would soon become famous for. The art is signed as "Seuss" in the lower right corner. Geisel had adopted his mother's maiden name while at Dartmouth College where he was editor-in-chief at the school's humor magazine Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern; he was caught drinking on campus (during Prohibition) and was ordered to cease work on the magazine. He started signing his artwork as Seuss to get around this! This wild early comic illustration is matted with an opening of 10.5" x 7" and framed using Plexiglas for an overall size of 19.5" x 16". The lower left corner and upper right side of the frame have some damage. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. A Chuck Jones Gallery Letter of Authenticity and the original typed caption are included in an envelope on the backside of the frame. The art is in Good to Very Good condition with some handling wear, a bit of whiteout, and mild age-related toning.
