Description

Daniel Bishop Remodeling the Work of the Carpenter of Nazareth Single-Panel Editorial Comic Original Art (St. Louis Star Times, c. 1939-40). It took some gumption for the American mass media to attack Nazi Germany before the U.S.' formal engagement, what with corporate Hollywood and many publishers skirting the issue in the name of "fair-play" isolationism. Bishop was a bold exception, as the transformed crucifix, here, attests. This one would pre-date the famous Captain America #1 cover (Hitler, punched in the face) of 1941, and likely coincides with the first Hollywood feature to confront the menace, 1939's Hitler -- Beast of Berlin. Ink and crayon over graphite on pebble-grain Coquille board. Image area, 12" x 13". Moderate toning and smudging. Very Good condition.
