Disneyland on the Air Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Little Golden Book Preliminary Covers and Interior Illustration by Samuel Armstrong Original Art Group of 6 plus #D43 Published Book (Walt Disney/Golden Press, 1955). The opening of the majestic Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California was an event unlike any other in the world of animation. As part of the celebration, several children's storybooks were released that were tied in with the opening, including this Little Golden Book #D43. Sam Armstrong (1893 - 1977), an artist/animator who worked on such Disney classics as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi, created the book's cover art and inside illustrations. This group of rare original art includes a preliminary cover design painted on a 6.25" x 8" cel that became stuck on the cover mechanical artboard and loosened some of the red background. There are four more cover designs included that were considered but ultimately not used; the first is a full-sized image of Mickey and Donald in tuxedos and top hats, with an approximate image size of 6.25" x 8" on a board measuring 9.75" x 12.5" that has been signed by Sam Armstrong in graphite and park designer John Hench (1908 - 2004) in ink, plus three more smaller designs measuring about 4" x 5.25" on 9" x 10" boards. The interior illustration included is the title page image of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck hoisting a flag, with an image size of 6.5" x 10.5" on a 9" x 12" board. A copy of the #D43 published book is included as well. The art ranges from Fair to Good on the cel cover design and Good to Very Good on the full-size cover design with some handling and edge wear.
