Astro Boy Production Cel and Animation Drawing (Tezuka Productions, c. 1980-81). "Soaring high in the skies, he may be small, but only in size! Astro Boy! Astro Boy! He is brave and gentle and wise!" Astro Boy flies through the air in this excellent original production cel from the 1980 color adaptation of the seminal anime series Astro Boy. Created by the great Godfather of Manga Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy is the first popular animated character to embody the aesthetic that would become familiar worldwide as anime. One of the most important figures in anime history, Astro Boy is hand-painted here at a full-figure and centered 5" x 4" on the 12 field cel. A characteristically perfect pose, this piece is accompanied by its matching original animation drawing rendered in graphite and color pencil on 12 field animation paper. Both the cel and drawing are numbered B20 in the upper right corners. Each piece shows minor studio handling and edge wear, and the drawing shows light wrinkling, surface scuffing, and the pegholes are attached with tape. The condition of the drawing is Good, and the cel's condition is Very Good.
