Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth Rei Ayanami Production Cel Setup with Production Background (Gainax, 1997). "I'm still alive...?" "Ayanami!!" Lost in contemplation, Rei makes an arresting monochrome appearance in this original production cel setup from the re-cap portion of the theatrically release film Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth. The preceding television series was instrumental in breathing new life in the anime industry in the mid- to late-90s. Widely celebrated for its complex characters, thought-provoking themes, and deconstruction of the long-held traditions of the mecha genre, this series set a high standard for anime that can be seen to this day. After surviving a catastrophic encounter with the angel Armisael, the mysteries of Rei's existence begin to come to light in this moment seen at the 44:33 timestamp of the film. The image is notably similar to the one seen in Episode 23 "Tears", near the 15:43 timestamp but with slight variations. A rare gem for any fan of the groundbreaking series, this spectacular closeup of the enigmatic Rei from a key scene features a substantial and frame-filling image area of 10" x 8" on the 12 field cel numbered C233 A1 in the top right. The setup is paired with a hand-painted production background, possibly from the series, which has been rendered nearly edge-to-edge in gouache on board trimmed to an overall size of 13.5" x 10". With typical handling and edge wear including minor linework fading with areas of restoration to the cel and faint surface/corner wear to the background, overall this pivotal setup is in Very Good condition.
