Description

Astro Boy Astro Boy and Police Officer Black-and-White Production Cel with Key Master/Master Background (Mushi Production, c. 1963-76). This stunning lot offers an amazingly rare hand-inked and hand-painted black-and-white Key Master/Master setup from the original adaptation of the manga by the legendary Osamu Tezuka (1928 - 1989), Astro Boy. Originally titled Tetsuwan Atom, or Mighty Atom, this animated series debuted in Japan on January 1, 1963, under the direction of Tezuka, and is considered by many as the show that laid the groundwork for what we now know as anime. Known for its clever use of limited animation, this series ran for 193 episodes in Japan, with 104 of them adapted for Western audiences. Featuring an exceptional full-figure image of the emblematic character, this three-layer 12-field cel has Astro standing at 3" x 3.75", showcasing also the sleeping police officer with an image size of 3.25" x 3". The cel is displayed on a terrific monochrome Key Master/Master background, done in gouache on a 12-field background board featuring an office. The cel layers show slight curling and faint surface scuffing that doens't affect the art. A small scuffed area can be seen in the bottom right area of the background. The cel is taped to the background with archival artist tape. Presenting overall mild handling and edge wear from production, the lot is in Good to Very Good condition.
