Walt Disney World - Western River Expedition Sheriff and Horse Rough Concept Drawings by Marc Davis (Walt Disney, 1967). "Now, to caricature the West, this is part of what everybody knows in the movies, and everybody is most familiar with... we'd have good guys, we'd have bad guys... we'd have everything you can think of!... What you're seeing here is the very beginnings of how we create an attraction." In the fall of 1967 (and early in the development of Walt Disney World), Marc Davis embarked on the development of a massive "Wild West" themed attraction called Western River Expedition, planned for the second phase of Park expansion. To begin, Marc created numerous exploratory sketches to set the staging, characters, and other necessary elements before transforming them into final production sketches. Davis' typical approach to Imagineering is represented in this quintessential sheet of exploratory roughs of a sheriff and horse. Ultimately, Marc was reassigned to Pirates of the Caribbean by 1972, leaving the Western River Expedition in limbo, never being approved or cancelled. This incredible artifact comes from the collection of Marc and Alice Davis and is a remnant of one of the most ambitious projects never-to-be realized for Walt's Vacation Kingdom. Measuring 17" x 14", this page of early developmental artwork is in Very Good condition, exhibiting minor wear.From the Disney Legend Inductees Marc and Alice Davis Archive.
