The Little Mermaid Ariel Production Cel (Walt Disney, 1989). This is a terrific close-up production cel of Ariel from Walt Disney's wildly popular 28th animated feature, The Little Mermaid. Hand-painted on 12-field acetate with an image of 10" x 7". This expressive portrait captures Ariel's luminous eyes and flowing hair in a moment that distills her curiosity and courage. Presented over a background print, the setup also includes a separate effects layer with hand-painted water-bubble highlights that add sparkle and dimensionality to the composition. Elegantly framed to 20" x 16.5", it displays beautifully. The Little Mermaid reintroduced audiences to Disney's classic musical storytelling, pairing vibrant character animation with the acclaimed songs of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. The tale follows Ariel, King Triton's 7th and youngest daughter, whose fascination with the human world leads her to make a fateful bargain with the sea witch Ursula. A box-office and critical triumph, the film helped launch the Disney Renaissance. Ariel is the 4th official member of the Disney Princess lineup, with screen-used close-ups of this quality being especially sought after.
