Description
The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg Townsfolk and Gold Coins Production Cel Setup with Key Master Background (Van Buren Studio, 1936). "Felix, Felix, F-E-L-I-X! Yay Felix!" A soft clinking and tinkling can be heard between the crowd's cheers as gold coins rain from the sky in this original Key Master setup from The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg, the first of only three Felix the Cat shorts produced in Technicolor by Van Buren Studios. This series was an attempt at character revival featuring Felix in color for the first time, but only lasted a scant three films (with a fourth left cancelled in the storyboard stages) which all debuted between early February and late May 1936. Felix would not appear again until his move to the small screen in a 1958 television series adaptation by Famous Studios. This short saw Felix using Goldie the goose to help bring wealth back to the poor townsfolk, until she's "goose-napped" by the detestable Captain Kidd. Felix manages to defeat the nefarious pirate captain and recover the stolen treasure with his cannon fire of coins raining down on the happy villagers spotted near the 6:52 mark when viewed online. The 12 field 2-peghole nitrate cel has been hand-inked and hand-painted with an astonishing four layers of townsfolk and coins, and bears sequence numbers in the upper right corner of each layer. The 14 villagers appear half to full-figured ranging in height from 0.5" to 1.5", and the largest coins have a diameter just over 0.25". The hand-painted Key Master background is rendered in gouache and ink on 2-peghole board trimmed to 13" x 10" and numbered 60 along the right edge. With typical handling and edgewear including age-related toning, remaining tape, minor warping to the cel layers with faint edge/corner creasing to the background, and pin/staple holes with oxidation along the top edge of the setup, overall this rare, Key Master setup is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
