Description
Willy Mendes A Shielded Soul Knows No Release Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (c. 1970). Mendes, a leading surrealist of the Underground Comix movement, invokes the drawing styles and the words of various other counterculture figures in this vividly realized composition. Quotations and allusions come from the likes of Ed Sanders (of the rock band the Fugs) and abstract poets Walt Whitman and Wallace Stevens. There are, as well, visual references to such fellow Underground artists as Vaughan Bodé, Kim Deitch, Rory Hayes, Jim Osborne, and Trina Robbins. Some of the influences are cited in handwritten notations on the reverse. No publishing pedigree is documented. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15".
