Description

Chester Gould Dick Tracy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-21-45 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1945). Gould relished his villains, in a backhanded way -- and he especially enjoyed killing them off by extravagant methods, given the contempt for the criminal element that had inspired Dick Tracy. The artist disposed of Itchy Oliver, a sadistic mobster, with ordinary gunfire, but Gould lingered on the death scene for two excruciating days. Here is the first of those volleys -- three well-placed bullets from Detective Tracy, just as Oliver is drawing a hidden weapon. The payoff is generous and cathartic, considering that Oliver has been subjecting the captive Tracy to an ordeal of slow starvation. Meanwhile (Panel 1), Junior Tracy leads a raid on Oliver's hideout. The date is significant: Gould enjoyed getting Tracy out of such scrapes just in time for the hero to arrive home for Christmas. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.5" x 6". Toning and handling wear commensurate with age, with one conspicuously stained lettering correction. Very Good condition.
From the Ray Edw Collection.
