Description

George Wunder Terry and the Pirates Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-20-68 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1968). Terry Lee and ace manhunter Fyffe Drummond infiltrate a troupe of actors in search of a defector from Soviet Russia. A chance encounter with a stage-struck woman poses a distraction -- to Terry's chagrin. Wunder by now has made Terry and the Pirates distinctively his own, having developed a style and a narrative voice quite distinct from original creator Milton Caniff. Perhaps no other artist in the newspaper-strip arena was as capable of drawing such luminous, searching eyes -- a talent coincidentally shared by the comic books' Ramona Fradon (Aquaman) and Bill Everett (Sub-Mariner). Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 25.5" x 17". Each panel has been cut-and-pasted to a backing board. There is some uneven age-toning, culminating in darkened upper and left edges. Otherwise, the condition is Very Good.
