Popeye was part of early set of "black box" titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Earlier NES titles included hangtabs that were perforated into the back top portion of the box. Games that include this hangtab are some of the most sought after games in the video game collecting market, especially the "black box" games. Finding these titles with higher grades will become increasingly harder to come by in years to come.

One of the most beloved arcade classics, Donkey Kong, was born out of Shigeru Miyamoto's desire to create a Popeye video game. At the time, King Features Syndicate wouldn't license the Popeye characters to Nintendo to create a game, so Miyamoto used the Popeye characters as inspiration for his own characters instead. After the success that Nintendo had with Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., King Features Syndicate granted the license to Nintendo in 1982 to create Popeye for arcades in 1983. That Popeye game was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System and released in the United States in the Spring of 1986.
