Description

Donald Duck on Tom Sawyer's Island Book 2-Page Spreads by Tony Strobl and Burny Mattinson Original Art Group of 2 (Walt Disney/Whitman, 1960). Disneyland is featured prominently in the sweet little storybook, starring Donald Duck with his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Here is the original artwork for a pair of two-page spreads from the book. The art is credited to longtime Disney comic book artist Tony Strobl (1915 - 1991) and the Mattinsons (that's Disney Legend Burny Mattinson and his wife Sylvia). In the story, Donald and the boys are fishing at Tom Sawyer's Island, when Dewey gets an idea - as a joke on his uncle, he buys a large balloon in the shape of a fish, to make Donald think he's landed a huge catch. One of these two-page spreads (for pages 12 and 13) shows Dewey at the balloon stand, with Disneyland's Main Street seen behind him; this single illustration has an image size of 17.75" x 10.75". Note the "Mickey Mouse" balloon at the stand! The second spread includes two separate illustrations: Donald at Injun Joe's Cave, rubbing sticks together to make fire (last page, image size 8" x 5.5"), and the boys bringing Donald firewood (inside back cover, image size 7" x 7.5"). This last illo is also used as the inside front cover, with the image "flopped" (reversed). Art is in gouache on illustration board; the artboards measure 20" x 11.5". A copy of the published book, plus color print-outs of the spreads with text, are included as well. Art condition is Very Good, with minor handling wear.
