Description

Jack Kirby Prince Valiant Animation Concept Art/Pitchpiece Original Art (Ruby-Spears, 1983). It is a well-established fact that Hal Foster's Prince Valiant comic strip had an influence on a young Jack Kirby's artistic trajectory. Compare the mask that Prince Val work in strip #46 (12-25-1937) to Etrigan the Demon's face (DC Comics, 1972). So imagine how jazzed Jack "King" Kirby likely was to pitch a cartoon based on Foster's Prince Valiant with Kirby's own designs behind it! Sadly, it never came to be. Every panel on this piece is a gem! We also think the leering phantom in the first panel reminds us of the Blue Meanies from the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. This big work was also printed on Page 8 of The Jack Kirby Collector #30 (TwoMorrows, 2000). Created in pure graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 29" x 19". Toned, with some graphite smudges. In Very Good condition.
