Description

Peter Poplaski COMIX Retail-Poster Illustration Original Art (Kitchen Sink Press, 1978). Poplaski designed this point-of-purchase poster image for the community of head-shop retailers that carried various Underground Comix titles. Prominent elements include a Basil Wolverton-style face, a Wally Wood-style alien creature, and visual/stylistic references to Underground avatars Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, Kim Deitch's Waldo the Cat, a voluptuous takeoff on Harold Gray's Little Orphan Annie, Will Eisner's The Spirit, and publisher Denis Kitchen. Attached to the reverse is a color-reproduction layer. Ink, white-paint highlights, and shading film over graphite on textured illustration board. Light toning, with minimal erosion in the painted white lettering. Excellent condition.
From the Denis Kitchen Collection.
