Description

Reed Crandall Witzend Martian Battle Scene Original Art (1960s). Crandall's many illustrations of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian-adventure stories typically concentrate on heroic John Carter, a Southerner transported away from Earth. This unusual piece centers on more of a Tarzan-styled character, who appears without the semi-armored attire associated with John Carter. A component of a suite, or suites, composed for an unpublished Canaveral Press set of Burroughs novels, the piece saw print in a recurring series of Crandall plates in Wally Wood's Witzend magazine. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15.5", glass-front framed to 17" x 12". Excellent condition. Frame itself shows some paint-scuffing.
From the Roger Hill Collection.
