Description

Joe Kubert G.I. Combat #99 "Haunted Tank" Splash Page 1 Original Art (DC, 1963). DC's "Haunted Tank" series pivots on a ghostly Civil War general who becomes involved in World War II. The concept inspires this intense introductory page from a story involving a struggle to secure a water supply in a desert battleground. Long touted as the greatest war-comics artist, Kubert combines great-looking military hardware with the human element. Kubert's use of black-ink spotting draw the eye directly to the center of the action. The "Haunted Tank" series, dating from 1961, lent an eerie subtext to DC's popular combat-comics universe, pointing toward the Weird War series (1971-1983) at DC. Twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 18". Kubert's signature appears at lower right. Excellent condition, with light toning.
