Description
Hal Foster Tarzan #229 Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-28-35 (King Features Syndicate, 1935). It's not hard to imagine that Hal Foster was already noodling around the idea of a Viking-themed strip at this time in 1935. It is known that while he was working on Tarzan, he began the concept of a stand-alone strip tentatively titled "Derek, Son of Thane" (the name changed to "Prince Arn", and eventually to Prince Valiant before it saw print). Foster had started the Tarzan strip in 1928 and would continue to illustrate it until 1937, just a few months after his Prince Valiant strip would debut. This oversized masterpiece, starring the Lord of the Apes, is beautifully rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 19.75" x 26.5". The logo is a printed paste-up. Two panels in the third tier are stripped-in corrections, taped in from the backside. There is also a slight crease in that tier. There is light toning and handling wear, and just a bit of white paint loss in the "Next Week" caption. Glass front framed to 26" x 36.25". In Very Good condition.More information about Hal Foster.
