Description
Mike Mignola Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #54 Double Splash Pages 2-3 Original Art (DC, 1993). A gloriously gothic graveyard from the hand of Mike Mignola, captured at the exact moment his signature chiaroscuro style had fully crystallized. Published in 1993, this issue landed squarely between Hellboy's debut in SDCC Comics #2 and his first full-color appearance in John Byrne's Next Men #21 the very next month, making this spread a fascinating snapshot of an artist on the brink of superstardom. Every hallmark is here: stark mausoleums and tombstones, angel statues and crosses, sculpted silhouettes, and Batman rendered almost entirely in shape and shadow. Perched atop a mausoleum with bats swirling overhead, the Dark Knight confronts a deranged graveyard devotee in the occult-tinged opener to "Sanctum", a story Mignola co-plotted as well as penciled and inked. A perfect balance of light and darkness, this double splash feels like a dry run for the visual language that would soon define Hellboy. Created in ink over blue pencil and graphite on conjoined DC Bristol boards with an image area of 20.25" x 15.5". Held together by tape on the back, glue residue staining due to missing text paste-up in the top left ("That's enough, Lowther!"), missing page number paste-up on Page 2, discolored production tape and tape residue, small piece missing from lower left corner, toned stat title and text paste-ups, light waviness across spread due to ink application, light smudging, and whiteout corrections.
